Batman: gotham city is a 2012 action-adventure stealth video game based on DC Comics' Batman developed for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows. It was developed by Rocksteady Studios in the United Kingdom and published by London based Eidos Interactive in conjunction with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The PS3, pc, Xbox 360 versions of the game were released on August 25, 2012 in North America and August 28, 2012 in Europe, and the PC version was released on September 15, 2012 in North America and on September 18, 2012 in Europe. The Mac OS X version of the game will be released by Feral Interactive in November 2012.[1]

gotham city, written by veteran Batman writer Paul Dini, is based on the long-running comic book mythos, as opposed to most other Batman games, which are adaptations of the character in other media besides the source material. The Joker, Batman's arch enemy, has instigated an elaborate plot from within gotham city, where many of Batman's other villains have been started. Batman investigates and comes to learn that the Joker is trying to create an army of Bane-like creatures to threaten Gotham City, and is forced to put a stop to the Joker's plans. The game's main characters are voiced by the actors from the DC Animated Universe, namely Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Arleen Sorkin reprising their roles as Batman, the Joker, and Harley Quinn, respectively. The game is played as a third-person perspective action-adventure game with a primary focus on Batman's combat abilities, his stealth and detective skills, and an arsenal of gadgets that can be used in both combat and exploration.

The Joker attacks Gotham City's Mayor's office but is foiled by Batman, who escorts him to northern blackgate. Due to a recent fire at Gotham City's west Blackgate Prison, many members of the Joker's gang have been temporarily relocated to the north. As Batman accompanies the guards taking the Joker inside, the prison security is overridden by Harley Quinn, allowing the Joker to escape and take control of the facility. Batman quickly realizes that these events have been part of the Joker's plan and that the Joker had bribed a security guard to help him escape and kidnap Commissioner Gordon. The Joker threatens to detonate bombs scattered around Gotham City and arkham asylum. should anyone attempt to enter Arkham and gotham, forcing Batman to work alone; however, he is able to rely on Oracle who helps guide him through the asylum over the radio. Batman is able to gain access to a Batcave he created on the island.the batcave has a gotham entrance to access it.

After being rescued from Harley Quinn, Gordon reveals to Batman the location of Bane, who has been experimented on by Dr. Penelope Young, one of the city's doctors. Following a fight with Bane, Batman learns that the Joker is seeking a chemical called Titan created by Dr. Young that is being produced in the city. The compound is based on the Venom drug that gives Bane his super strength, though the Titan formula is much more potent. The Joker plans to use the Titan formula on the various Blackgate inmates to create an army of abnormally powerful henchmen.

Batman discovers the location of the Titan formula, but after failing to save Dr.chen, sets out to rescue mayor Quincy Sharp, who has been taken hostage by Quinn. After saving the mayor and defeating Quinn, Batman meets with Poison Ivy to discover the cure to the Titan strain. Ivy reveals that the plants used to synthesize the cure are stored deep in the lair of Killer Croc. Batman ventures down to Croc's Lair and acquires the ingredients while evading Croc's attempts to foil his plan. After Batman collects enough of the antidote, he sets off a trap to defeat Croc before returning to the Batcave. While creating the antidote for titan, Batman only has enough time to synthesize one dose before Poison Ivy's Titan-infused plants destroy the Batcave's computer.

After destroying the mutated plant life and defeating Ivy, the Joker invites Batman to his "party", where Batman sees the Joker holding Scarface, sitting on a throne of mannequins. The Joker then reveals that he has recaptured Gordon and attempts to shoot Gordon with a Titan-filled dart. Batman jumps in front of it, taking the injection himself. Batman attempts to resist the change, after which an upset Joker shoots himself with the Titan gun, becoming a massive monster. In his new form, the Joker proudly displays himself to news helicopters and publicly challenges Batman to fight with titan. Joker tries to persuade Batman to fight with him using Titan formula and change into a monster, urging him to show the world what a freak Batman really is. Batman accepts, and uses the titan on himself. The Joker, angered and excited at his decision, begins his assault on Batman with a slew of henchmen and even fighting him personally. Eventually, Batman defeats him and The Joker and all of the henchmen and security officers affected by the Titan strain revert back to their original states. Joker is taken back to his cell and armed Gotham police officers slowly regain control of the asylum. As Batman is leaving Arkham, a call about Two-Face is overheard on the radio

Batman, along with allies Oracle and Commissioner Gordon appear in the game. In addition to the Joker, Batman encounters other foes. He must defend himself from an enraged Bane,[12] sneak up on Zsasz before he can harm guards and doctors,[10] battle his way through hallucinogen-induced nightmares created by the Scarecrow,[10] and silently collect samples from Poison Ivy's plants located in Killer Croc's lair.[13] Batman also battles female antagonists Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy.[14] The Riddler does not physically appear in the game, but communicates with Batman and challenges him to find the hidden clues he has placed around the island.[8]

Other Batman allies and enemies are presented in the game as character information that can be unlocked from finding the Riddler's clues, often by finding objects or areas based on that character such as a collection of umbrellas (representing The Penguin). Jack Ryder can be heard reporting about the Arkham crisis. Though not visible himself, Mr. Freeze's special frozen cell can be found in-game, with previous mentions to his escape from the asylum; similar cells can be found for characters such as Two-Face and Calendar Man. Clayface makes a small cameo, but never in his true form as he is seen pacing around his cell disguised as other characters, trying to trick the player into releasing him. The body of Ra's al Ghul can be seen in the morgue, however if the player returns to the room later in the game, they find his body missing. Scarface also makes three small cameo appearances, once in one of Scarecrow's hallucinogen-induced nightmares, a second in a display case in Arkham Manor, and a third time alongside the Joker near the end of the game. The Mad Hatter almost appeared in the game, though he was ultimately taken out.[15]

Three voice actors reprise their roles from the DC Animated Universe TV shows. Batman is portrayed by Kevin Conroy,[10] the Joker by Mark Hamill,[16] and Harley Quinn by Arleen Sorkin,[10] who played these parts in Batman: The Animated Series, and most subsequent cartoons. Additionally, veteran voice actors Steven Blum, Cree Summer, Tom Kane, Dino Andrade, Tasia Valenza, Wally Wingert, Fred Tatasciore, and James Horan portray Killer Croc, Dr. Young, Commissioner Gordon, Scarecrow, Poison Ivy, Riddler, Bane, and Jack Ryder, respectively.

The story was written by Paul Dini (Batman: The Animated Series, Detective Comics), while Wildstorm crafted the appearances of the characters.[10] The game is based on the 70-year Batman franchise as a whole rather than being tied to any particular media adaptation. In developing the game combat, Rocksteady originally formed it as a full rhythm action game. It was later set in 2D, which involved colored circles crashing into each other whenever there was a fight; the final system was based on this 2D model.[19] Arkham Asylum runs on Epic Games Unreal Engine 3.[20][21] The Windows version makes use of Microsoft's Games for Windows service, allowing players to earn gamerscore, and also uses nVidia's PhysX engine for improved physics.[22] This technology allows things such as dynamic per character interaction with paper and leaves, surfaces which can be scratched and chipped, and dynamic destructible cloth elements such as banners and cobwebs.[23][24] To combat software piracy in the Windows version of the game, developers implemented an anti-piracy measure that disables Batman's glide ability and causes other bugs, thus preventing a player using a pirated game from progressing beyond a certain point.[25] Although not the first game to implement such countermeasures, Arkham Asylum received media coverage, as it was seen as a novel method of copy protection.[26]

In April 2009 advertisements began appearing in the PlayStation Network service advertising the ability to play as the Joker.[27] IGN later confirmed that the Joker would be available for the PlayStation 3 as a free download from PlayStation Store,[28] but would only be playable in the challenge maps.[28][29] PlayStation 3 players can unlock the Batman: Arkham Asylum Batcave Outpost, a personal apartment with displays of Batman's suit, gadgets, the Batmobile, and the Batwing for PlayStation Home.[30] A demo of the game was released on the PlayStation Store on August 6, 2009 and on Xbox Live and PC on August 7, 2009.[31] The Insane Night map pack was released on September 17, 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and features the Totally Insane "FreeFlow" combat map and the Nocturnal Hunter "Predator" map. The second free pack, Prey in the Darkness, was released on September 23, 2009 for PlayStation 3 in the North America, and both consoles in the EU, and features the Heart of Darkness "FreeFlow" combat map and the Hothouse Prey "Predator" map.[32]

A Collector's Edition Batarang Box Set was released by GameStop and Wal-Mart. The package features a 14-inch (36 cm) Batarang, a 50-page character journal, a bonus disc that includes interviews with the voice actors, and the Crime Alley challenge map. The Wal-Mart regular and Collector's Edition's of the game came with a code for an armored Batsuit for use only in the challenge maps. Additionally, a pre-order challenge map from GameStop was announced called Scarecrow Nightmare. It places Batman under the influence of Scarecrow's fear toxin, causing him to hallucinate and all the enemies to be seen as skeletons.[33] Both codes are included in their respective editions. A Game of the Year Edition was released on March 26, 2010 in Europe, Australia and Japan and in North America on May, 11, 2010. The updated edition features all of the original game, the extra challenge maps Totally Insane, Nocturnal Hunter, Crime Alley, Scarecrow Nightmare, and the ability to play the game in 3D on any regular 2D television using TriOviz stereoscopy glasses.[34] A comic book titled Batman: Arkham Asylum - The Road to Arkham was released along with the game as a pre-order bonus from and has since become a free digital download comic on the PlayStation Network. It was written by Alan Burnett with illustrations by Carlos D'Anda.[35]

Gotham City is an open world action video game that incorporates elements of stealth and predator tactics. The gadgets previously obtained in the first game are present througout gotham City, . Most of these gadgets have improved or boast new capabilities; for example, the Cryptographic Sequencer can also track signals, the line launcher now can be deployed as a tightrope and has a feature that allows Batman to flip over and launch another zipline, switching directions. The remote control Batarang now has a built in brake and boost, and the grappling gun can now be used while gliding to boost Batman further up into the air. New gadgets include smoke pellets to confuse armed enemies when spotted by them, the Remote Electrical Charge is cancelled, . The game incorporates more puzzle elements; the use of Batman's "Detective Mode", which highlights elements such as enemy skeletons and clues on-screen, is used to perform forensic activities such as tracing the origin of a sniper round.

.[13] However, Rocksteady's art director David Hego described the new detective mode as an "augmented reality mode", and game director Sefton Hill has also stated that although enemies and evidence can be seen more clearly, the navigational part is toned down as they found that some players completed Arkham Asylum using detective mode almost throughout the entire game.[14] Optional challenges from the Riddler to collect hidden trophies placed around the city are also present, but require additional effort to locate, such as interrogation of men loyal to the Riddler, and the use of nearly all of Batman's gadgets to disable "traps" and barriers placed around them. After a certain number of trophies are found.[13][15]

The player controls Batman, making their way around gotham City to complete mission objectives. In addition to the primary mission, the game introduces secondary missions featuring a number of key characters and their stories. The player can opt to move silently, avoiding inmates and other enemies using a combination of gadgets to sneak up on enemies to incapacitate them. Batman's gliding ability allows players to dive downward and pull themselves back up, enabling the player to traverse the city by air. [1][2]Batman defeats an enemy in a demonstration of Arkham City's "Freeflow" combat system.At other times, the player may be forced to fight inmates using an improved version of the Freeflow combat system from Arkham city and Asylum, allowing for multiple simultaneous counters, the ability to counter thrown objects, jump attacks, powerful multi-strike beat-downs, upgraded Batarang and Batclaw attacks, and the ability to use gadgets such as the Explosive Gel. Movement about the city is made difficult due to the formation of gangs and territory between rival villains, such as Two-Face 3 missions, The Penguin 6 missions, and the Joker, that causes in-fighting that Batman may avoid.[13]

Catwoman is also a playable character with her own heist-focused storyline at specific points in the game. Her combat is more acrobatics-oriented and features her claws, whip, and bolas.[16][17] She has her own version of Detective Mode called "Thief Vision" to locate items for stealing. Dax Ginn revealed at Gamescom that the game has about 40 hours of gameplay with the main campaign lasting 25 hours and 15 hours for the side missions.[18][19] The game contains 440 Riddler challenges, which make up one of the multiple side missions that players can embark on at any given point in the game.[20] Rather than rely on maps, the player can mark Riddler puzzles as they are found, if the player does not have the necessary equipment to complete them. A portion of the puzzles are also specific to Catwoman, and can only be completed by her.

The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions of Arkham City include a stereoscopic 3D mode for 3D HDTVs and for 2D HDTVs via Inficolor 3D glasses. It uses TriOviz for Games Technology, which is integrated with Unreal Engine 3. All Arkham City gameplay and cinematics have S3D support.[21]

[3][4]Actor Mark Hamill was reluctant to return for the sequel, wanting to leave the Joker role on a "high note", but relented after learning of the involvement of Paul Dini and Kevin Conroy.[22]gotham City features a large ensemble cast of characters from the history of Batman comics. Returning characters from Arkham Asylum include Batman (Kevin Conroy),[23] the Joker (Mark Hamill)—in what Hamill claimed would be his final time voicing the character[24]—Warden-turned-Mayor Quincy Sharp (Tom Kane), police Commissioner James Gordon (voiced by David Kaye, who replaces Kane), [25] and Jack Ryder (James Horan). Returning villains include the Riddler (Wally Wingert),[26][27] Victor Zsasz (Danny Jacobs),[28] Bane,[29] and Poison Ivy (Tasia Valenza),[30][31]. Joker's sidekick Harley Quinn also returns, voiced by Tara Strong, who replaces Arleen Sorkin. Playable characters introduced for Arkham City include Nightwing,[30] Robin,[32] and Catwoman (Grey DeLisle).[16] Catwoman takes advantage of the chaos in Arkham City to steal valuable items hoarded by the inmates.[33]

Other characters marking their debut in the series include the manipulative warden of Arkham City Hugo Strange (Corey Burton), Two-Face (Troy Baker),[34] and the Penguin (Nolan North).[35] Maurice LaMarche voices both Mr. Freeze and Calendar Man, while Stana Katic lends her voice as Talia al Ghul.[36][37][28] Alfred Pennyworth (Martin Jarvis) joins the cast, supporting Batman by radio alongside Barbara Gordon (Kimberly Brooks). Other characters include the undead zombie Solomon Grundy (Fred Tatasciore), the shapeshifter Clayface (Rick D. Wasserman), the leader of the League of Assassins Rā's al Ghūl (Dee Bradley Baker), the mind-controlling Mad Hatter (Peter MacNicol),[38] and the assassin Deadshot (Chris Cox), who has infiltrated Arkham City to kill a "high-profile character".[39] The villain Hush (Kevin Conroy), the mysterious Azrael (Khary Payton), and reporter Vicki Vale (Kari Wahlgren) are also featured. Black Mask (also voiced by North), Killer Croc, and Freeze's wife Nora Fries make cameo appearances in the game.

For more details on the setting, see the Batman: Arkham City comic book.The events of Arkham City take place 18 months after Arkham Asylum.[40] Quincy Sharp, former warden of Arkham Asylum, has taken credit for stopping the Joker's Asylum takeover, and used the notoriety to become mayor of Gotham City. Deeming Arkham and Blackgate Penitentiary no longer suitable to contain the city's criminals and insane, Sharp has both facilities closed and buys out a large section of Gotham's slums, converting them into an immense open-air prison named Arkham City. Gotham City becomes a police state where those with the slightest trace of a criminal record, and opponents of Sharp's policies, including reporters, are sent to Arkham City. The facility is placed in the care of genius psychiatrist Hugo Strange — who is secretly manipulating Sharp[41] — and guarded by a squad of heavily-armed mercenaries hired from a rogue private military firm, TYGER Security. The inmates are given free rein as long as they do not attempt to escape. Batman maintains a vigil over the detention city, concerned that the chaotic situation there will get out of hand.[13] Meanwhile, the Joker is stricken with a potentially fatal disease, mutated by his consumption of, and subsequent transformation by, the Titan formula—an unstable steroid serum which has the ability to turn men into powerful monsters.[31]

At a press conference held by Bruce Wayne to declare his opposition to Arkham City, Wayne is arrested by Hugo Strange's TYGER mercenaries and is himself imprisoned in Arkham City. Strange discloses his knowledge of Wayne's dual identity as Batman before releasing him into the criminal populace. While Strange prepares for the commencement of Protocol 10, Wayne escapes from Penguin and obtains his crime-fighting equipment via airdrop by Alfred Pennyworth, allowing Wayne to become Batman. As Batman, he is first forced to save Catwoman from being executed by Two-Face who hopes to gain respect with her murder. After an assassination attempt on Catwoman by the Joker, Batman tracks the Clown Prince of Crime to his hideout in the Sionis Steelworks, believing he may know the truth behind Protocol 10.

Batman learns from Joker's doctor that the unstable properties of the Titan formula are mutating in Joker's blood, gradually eating away at his body and killing him. The Joker captures Batman and performs a blood transfusion on him infecting him with the same fatal disease. Batman is forced to find a cure for himself and Joker, or they will both perish. Batman is informed that Mr. Freeze had been developing a cure but has since been kidnapped by the Penguin.

Batman pursues Penguin to the Cyrus Pinkney National History Institute: defeating his forces, his imprisoned monster Solomon Grundy, and ultimately the Penguin himself, before liberating Mr. Freeze. Freeze tells Batman that he has already developed the cure, but its instability renders it useless. Batman deduces that the restorative properties within the blood of Rā's al Ghūl can complete the cure. Batman tracks one of Rā's al Ghūl's assassins to his lair in Wonder City, leading Batman into a confrontation with Rā's and his daughter Talia — Batman's former lover. With Rā's al Ghūl's blood, Freeze is able to develop a vial of working cure, but it is stolen by Harley Quinn before Batman can use it.

Batman returns to the Joker and finds him to be fully healed. While Batman and Joker fight, Protocol 10 is activated — A scheme to wipe out the entire population of Arkham City, destroying the criminal element of Gotham. The TYGER troops begin mass executions of prisoners, and Strange launches missile strikes from his base in Wonder Tower. A missile hits the steelworks, burying Batman under rubble. Before Joker can take advantage of the situation, Talia arrives and offers him immortality in exchange for sparing Batman's life. After Batman escapes with the help of Catwoman, Batman is convinced to put an end to Protocol 10 before pursuing Talia and Joker.

Batman infiltrates Wonder Tower and disables Protocol 10. Rā's al Ghūl is revealed to be the mastermind behind Arkham City, and mortally wounds Strange for failing to defeat Batman. With his dying breath, Strange activates Protocol 11 - Wonder Tower's self destruction. Batman and Rā's escape and Rā's commits suicide rather than risk capture. Joker contacts Batman, threatening to kill Talia unless Batman comes to the Monarch Theater. As Batman arrives, Joker demands the cure. Talia takes advantage of the Joker's momentary distraction and kills him. Talia then reveals that she has the cure, having intercepted it from Quinn, but she is killed by the real and still dying Joker. The second Joker is revealed to be Clayface, who had been masquerading as the healed Joker at the ailing villain's request.

Batman incapacitates Clayface, but Joker blows up the theater floor, sending Batman plummeting into Wonder City below. Batman destroys Rā's rejuvenating Lazarus Pit before the Joker can use it, and drinks a portion of the antidote. Batman debates curing his foe, but is attacked by the Joker, causing the antidote vial to smash. Batman maintains that in spite of everything Joker has done, he would have saved him. Joker finally succumbs to his illness and dies. Batman carries Joker's body out of Arkham City into the winter dawn.

Serious development of the game's story and concept started in February 2009, as teams were brought in from Arkham Asylum to Arkham City's development as they completed the work on that game.[42] The concept of expanding the game from the asylum into the city came early on in Arkham Asylum's development; once the team had programmed the Batman to dive and glide between buildings of the asylum, the adaption of this gameplay to the city was considered natural. Arkham Asylum was completed with the sequel in mind in both story and gameplay; as found by several players, a secret room in Arkham Asylum shows plans for Arkham City, purposely included to help link the story between the two games.[43] Sefton Hill, Arkham City's director from Rocksteady Studios, stated that a key goal for the game was to deliver the "'Batman in Gotham' feeling."[43] The sequel was described by Conroy as "really, really dark". While relating the game's dark nature to the animated movie Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker, Conroy also said, "It involves a lot of the villains and it goes to that area – it's that dark."[23]

As part of the "Batman in Gotham" design philosophy, the arsenal of moves and actions that the player could use as Batman was expanded. Although the team developed several ideas for new moves, gadgets, and abilities to be included, they only went forward with those that they felt would be authentic to Batman.[43] The studio also reviewed the play and combat systems used in Arkham Asylum, and built the new moves as natural extensions of the existing system as a means to "add even more depth and gameplay instead of changing them fundamentally".[43] The number of animations was doubled to reflect the larger arsenal of moves at the player's disposal.[43]

Another means of giving the player the Batman experience was through the larger game world. Arkham City has a virtual footprint five times larger than that of Arkham Asylum, and the navigational aspects were improved to give the player the experience of "the freedom and exhilaration of gliding down alleyways and soaring above the skyline".[43] Though the concepts were compared to an open world game, Hill notes that such freeform nature would not be appropriate for a Batman game, and designed Arkham City to challenge the player to think like Batman to survive in the game.[43] To counterbalance the larger game world, the developers also sought to include more challenges and side missions, while keeping the player alert as to the primary story mission, such that the players constantly are aware of "extreme pressure of the challenges that they face".[43]

With the open game world, Rocksteady included more villains not simply to populate the city, but purposely selected those that would create challenges for the player in the role of Batman.[42] Hugo Strange was selected as a primary antagonist as his power and control help to maintain the lockdown on Arkham City when Batman enters it. Strange is further aware of Batman's identity as Bruce Wayne, making Batman "vulnerable and exposed in a way that he has never been before", according to Hill.[42] Hill noted that Strange is a character many players may not have previously seen in relation to the Batman mythos, but that Strange's backstory and character are detailed throughout the game.[42] Catwoman was also included based on the long history between the character and Batman, though she was given her own agenda running parallel to the events within Arkham City.[42]

The presence of multiplayer had been rumored shortly after the game's official announcement, but was denied by Rocksteady Studios.[45][46] The developers had considered adding a multiplayer element to the game, but ultimately decided against this. According to Hill, they asked themselves "If we use all of the energy that is required to create multiplayer and instead focus this on the single player, would that deliver a better overall game?", and felt that they could not succeed in this, instead using their efforts to strengthen the single player game.[42]

Variety is added to the city itself, as certain areas are designed around the villains that control that particular territory. Dax Ginn, marketing game manager at Rocksteady Games said, "If you move into Joker's territory, you get a very Joker-ized experience, and all the artwork on the buildings – whether that's graffiti, signage, or whatever it might be – gives you a dense kind of Joker experience. So our art team has really put a lot of effort in making that sort of transition between one turf zone to another – really helping the player feel like they're making a physical transition into another emotional space.[47] To develop the expanded environment of Arkham City and build a "natural urban environment" for Batman, Rocksteady expanded its workforce from 75 to over 100 people.[48]

A limited series five-issue[49] monthly comic series, also titled Batman: Arkham City was released on May 11, 2011. The series bridges the plot between Arkham Asylum and Arkham City. It is written by Paul Dini with art by Carlos D'Anda.[50] On August 24, 2011 Arkham City's Facebook and Twitter accounts were "taken over" by the Riddler in a marketing campaign. Cryptic messages were created and signed "#EN" for Edward Nigma, the Riddler's alter ego. A special Xbox 360 console was eventually revealed.[51]

Warner Bros. partnered with several retailers and companies globally to provide bonus content as a reward for pre-ordering the game, including: Best Buy,, GameStop, Game, Gamestation, EB Games, Tesco, and Asda.[52] The content was only made available by pre-ordering the game with a specific retailer or purchasing a product such as a NOS beverage to obtain an unlockable code.[53]

Toys "R" Us in New York City, Time Square released 500 copies of Batman: Arkham City on Monday, October 17, a full day before the game officially hit shelves. Only 500 copies of the game were available at the event, and the first 100 customers who pre-order a copy through the stores "Personal Shopping Department" had a chance to get their game autographed by DC Entertainment co-publisher Jim Lee, Batman voice actor Kevin Conroy, and Arkham City game director Sefton Hill. The latter remaining 400 copies of Arkham City could be purchased at the event, although the player is unable to be entered into the contest.[54]

Batman: Arkham City was first officially released in North America on October 18, 2011 for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3,[2] followed on October 19 by Australia[2] and October 21 by Europe. Australian retailers EB Games and Game broke the official release date two days early, selling the game on October 17.[3] The Windows version had been scheduled for simultaneous release with other versions but in September, 2011 its release was pushed back to November 18 with no explanation given.[7][6]

[edit] Pre-order bonuses

A variety of alternative suits for Batman were revealed on August 1, 2011 including suit designs the character has worn in The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Earth One, the Bronze Age of Comics, Batman: The Animated Series, and Batman Beyond.[55] The Batman: The Animated Series skin is to be initially only available to GameStop customers in the U.S. with a Power-Up Rewards Membership.[56] A PS3-exclusive Sinestro Corps outfit was revealed in August 2011, that can initially only be unlocked via a unique code obtained with the purchase of the extended cut edition of the Warner Bros. film Green Lantern on Blu-ray from Best Buy.[57][58][59]

Batman's sidekick Robin (Tim Drake)[60] was announced as a playable character, with his own set of moves and gadgets, allowing him to be used in challenge maps. Additional skins were also made available, including his appearance as seen in Batman: The Animated Series and the Red Robin outfit.[61][62] The character also comes with two exclusive challenge maps: "Black Mask Hideout" and "Freight Train Escape".[60] Additionally, the "Joker's Carnival" challenge map was announced, set within the Joker's Sionis Steel Mill base where the player is faced with multiple waves of enemies.[63] The pre-order content was considered an "early access opportunity"[64] for purchasers, with Ginn confirming that all of the content would be made available for download after the game's release date.[64]

In the United Kingdom, the Robin Edition was announced for sale exclusively through the retailers Game and Gamestation, containing the game and all of the Robin pre-order content including the playable character, skins and challenge maps.[65] A series of "Steelbook Edition" versions of the game were also made available, featuring the standard game with a metallic case. The Joker-themed Steelbook includes the "Joker's Carnival" challenge map, the animated film Batman: Under the Red Hood on DVD (Blu-ray for PS3), and the Silver Age Batman skin DLC.[66] Three other villain-themed steelbook cases were also offered, featuring the likenesses of Two-Face and the Penguin.[52] A fourth steelbook featuring Catwoman was released, containing the Batman: Earth One alternative skin for Batman.[67]

The Collector's Edition contains a Batman statue by Kotobukiya, a collectible art book, Batman: Arkham City – The Album from WaterTower Music, the animated film Batman: Gotham Knight, the The Dark Knight Returns skin and the Penguin-themed "Iceberg Lounge" challenge map.[68][69] In July 2011, the Microsoft Windows version of the game was revealed to use Games for Windows – Live (GFWL) to access online services.[70] Confusion concerning the use of GFWL was raised when a distributor was told by Warner Bros. that the title did not use the Live system, but the use of GFWL was confirmed in late August.[71][72]

On October 25, 2011, a Batman themed Xbox 360 console bundle was released, containing the game, a DVD of Batman: Gotham Knight, a DVD of the Green Lantern film, the Green Lantern video game tie-in Rise of the Manhunters, and a 250GB Xbox 360 console. Additionally, a bundle containing these items and a Kinect controller was also released.[73]

New purchases of the game for Xbox 360 and PS3 are provided with a unique code that unlocks the Catwoman downloadable content (DLC) that enables a series of missions in the story campaign that can be played as Catwoman, with weapons and moves unique to the character. Although the missions were presented as part of the main game, on October 13, 2011, Warner Bros. announced that it would be restricted to new purchases. Users can also purchase the content separately. It was later announced that pre-owned copies purchased from GameStop would also contain the necessary unlock code.[74][75] The PC version of the game includes the DLC, requiring no downloads or additional installs to access.[76] A Warner Bros. rep confirmed that playing as Catwoman would not be required to complete the game.[77] The Catwoman DLC also contains two alternate skins for the character: her appearances from The Animated Series and Batman: The Long Halloween.[78]

Additional DLC packs are also available or scheduled for release. The Nightwing pack, released on November 1, 2011, includes Batman's ally Nightwing as a playable character for the game's challenge maps, an Animated Series alternative skin for the character,[79] and two additional challenge maps: "Wayne Manor" and "Main Hall".[80] The Robin pack was released on November 22, 2011, and contains the Robin pre-order content: the playable character, "Animated Series" and "Red Robin" skins and "Black Mask" and "Freight Train" challenge maps.[79] A Skins pack containing all of the alternate Batman pre-order skins was released on December 6, 2011.[81] Another pack was announced for release on December 20, 2011, containing the pre-order "Iceberg Lounge" and "Joker's Carnival" challenge maps, and a completely new challenge map: "Batcave".[82] On December 19, 2011, a new Batman skin was released—based on the character's outfit from Batman Incorporated—to download for free on all platforms.[83]

On October 23, 2011, an official map app was made available to purchase on the iOS App Store that contains maps for all areas of the game, the locations of in-game collectibles, and the solutions to the Riddler's riddles.[84]

[edit] Technical issues

During the launch week, issues were found to exist in the code-restricted content supplied with new purchases, with some customers discovering the code to be missing from their game, preventing them from obtaining the Catwoman story missions. The problem was reported by customers in Canada, in the United States and the United Kingdom. Warner Bros. issued a statement claiming that the missing codes had affected less than 0.5% of the total units sold, and provided a process for users to prove their game was purchased new in order to receive a replacement code.[85] Upon release in the United Kingdom, a technical issue rendered the game unplayable for some players, booting them from the game with an error message that the "downloadable content is corrupt." Rocksteady European community manager Sarah Wellock claimed that the fault lay with the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live online systems.[86] In early November, 2011, Rocksteady confirmed that it was investigating reports by numerous users that save files for the Xbox 360 version of the game were being erased without prompting, resulting in players losing their progress and being unable to complete the game.[87][88] On launch, performance issues arose for the PC version when DirectX 11 features were enabled; the developer acknowledged the inconvenience and recommended to run the game with DirectX 9 while a title update was released to address this matter.[89][90]

A spin-off game titled Batman: Arkham City Lockdown was developed by NetherRealm Studios for iOS. The game was released on December 7, 2011.[9] Taking place before Arkham City, the game sees players using touchscreen controls to fight enemies one-on-one, including villains such as Two-Face, Solomon Grundy, Joker and Deathstroke. Defeating enemies earns points that can be used to upgrade Batman's stats or unlock gadgets or costumes.[91][9]

Batman: Arkham City received critical acclaim and, as of October 29, is the best-reviewed game of 2011 according to review aggregator Metacritic.[48] Aggregating review websites GameRankings and Metacritic gave the PlayStation 3 version 95.94% and 96/100,[12][11] the Xbox 360 version 94.13% and 94/100[92][94] and the PC version 90.69% and 91/100.[93][95]

The Australian Official PlayStation Magazine awarded a perfect score of 10 stating that the game "is not only the best superhero game ever made, it's one of the best games ever made... it brings the caped crusader's world to life better than any comic, movie or television show before it.".[108] Game Informer also gave a perfect 10 score, labeling it ""the best licensed video game ever made" and stating "Arkham City not only lives up to the standards set by Arkham Asylum, it bests its predecessor."[99] Play3 (Germany) awarded a score of 92%, calling it "the best superhero game ever made".[109] Games Master awarded a score of 97%, calling it "one of the greatest games ever conceived."[110] Joystiq awarded it 4.5 out of 5, crediting the developers for "breathing life into a staggeringly beautiful world; one which hums not only with opportunity, but ambition", but criticized the dialog as clichéd.[107] Eurogamer awarded a score of 9 out of 10, lamenting that it lacks the same "surprise" as its predecessor, but praising the detailed world, the wide cast, and the variety of activities and missions.[98]

Worldwide, the game sold 2 million units in its first week of approximately 4.6 million shipped units, compared to Arkham Asylum which sold 4.3 million units in its entire release. This made Arkham City one of the fastest selling games ever.[111] On February 8, 2012, it was announced that over 6 million units of the game had been shipped since release.[112]

During the first week of sales in the United Kingdom, Batman: Arkham City became the number 1 selling game on all available formats, topping the all-format,[113] PS3[114] and Xbox 360 charts,[115] replacing FIFA 12. It became the fourth biggest launch of 2011 after FIFA 12, Gears of War 3 and L.A. Noire, and Warner Bros. biggest UK game launch ever, doubling the first week sales of Arkham Asylum.[116]

According to NPD Group, Batman: Arkham City was the second-best selling game in the United States for October 2011, selling 1.5 million copies across available formats, the tenth-best selling in November,[117][118] and the seventh-best selling game overall in 2011.[112] Additionally, game-rental service GameFly announced that it was the most requested game of 2011, beating out Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3.[112]

Batman: Arkham City was nominated for multiple awards at the 2011 Spike TV Video Game Awards including nominations for: Best Original Score, Best Graphics, Best Peformance by a Human Female (Tara Strong), Best Performance by a Human Male (Mark Hamill), Trailer of the Year (Hugo Strange Reveal Trailer), Best Studio (Rocksteady), and Game of the Year;[119] and won awards for: Character of the Year (Joker), Best Xbox 360 Game, Best Action Adventure Game, and Best Adapted Video Game.[120] As part of the Academy of Interactive Arts & Sciences (AIAS) 2011 awards, the game was nominated for Outstanding Achievement in Animation, Outstanding Achievement in Art Direction, Outstanding Achievement in Game Play Engineering, Outstanding Achievement in Game Direction, and Game of the Year,[121][122] and won one award for Adventure Game of the Year.[123]

Batman Arkham City has also won through the award for Best Xbox 360 Game of the Year, Best PC Game of 2011, as well as Best Action/Adventure game.[citation needed] In their "Game of the Year Awards 2011" blog post, Yahoo! Games awarded 'Batman: Arkham City' with the awards for Best Action/Adventure Game of the year award as well as Best Overall Game of 2011. The game has been nominated for Game of the Year and Best Game Design at the Game Developers Choice Awards,[112] and Game Audio Network Guild award's for Music of the Year, Best Soundtrack Album, Best Audio Mix, and Best Original Vocal - Choral for the track "Main Theme".[124]

According to Metacritic, based on average scores, the game was the joint number 1 best rated console game of 2011, alongside the role-playing game Skyrim. This also placed the games among the third highest rated games ever.[125] The game is ranked as the joint number 1 best rated console game of 2011 with the role-playing game Skyrim according to Metacritic. In December, 2011, E! Online ranked Arkham City number 1 on their list of the Top 10 Games of 2011.[126][127] Gamespot labeled it the Best Action/Adventure Game as part of its Best of 2011 series,[128] while Wired placed it number 3 on their list of the The 20 Best Videogames of 2011.[129] Time ranked it number 5 on their list of the Top 10 Video Games of 2011.[130] Joystiq listed it number 3 in their Joystiq Top 10 of 2011 list.[131]

Batman: gotham city is played as an over-the-shoulder, third-person perspective action-adventure game.[8][9] The player controls Batman as he makes his way around the island and structures of Arkham Asylum. In addition to running, jumping, and crouching, Batman is also able to glide from heights using his cape and use his grapple gun to ascend short heights or escape to gargoyle statues. To track Joker and other enemies, the player can switch in and out of "detective mode", which activates special visors in Batman's cowl.[10] In this mode, most of the game world is rendered in darker colors, but objects of interest and people are highlighted, including limited x-ray ability to detect the location of people. Special objects with which Batman can interact, either directly or using various gadgets gained over the course of the game, are also highlighted. In some sections of the game, the detective mode is augmented to detect compounds, fingerprints, and other clues, which are used to direct the player to the next location to explore.[11]

Gadgets include the batarang, an explosive gel compound sprayer and detonator, grappling gun, Batclaw, zip-line launcher and a code sequencer that can be used to overload security panels.[11] Some of these can be used both during normal exploration of the game world as well as in combat. The game world, though presented in a linear path, allows for exploration at any time, and recently-acquired gadgets can often be used to access areas that were previously inaccessible. Exploration of the world is encouraged by items and clues left by the Riddler for Batman to find; in addition to objects to be collected, some of the Riddler's riddles require the player to seek out a certain area related to the answer to a riddle and scan it with Batman's visor.[8] Solving these riddles unlocks additional content for the game, including challenge levels that test the player's skill at the game's combat system, as well as character bios, patient interviews, and detailed character trophies. Riddles, as well as defeating foes, also yield experience points, which can then be spent on several possible upgrades to Batman's arsenal, as well as his health and abilities, at any time.

The game uses a "Freeflow" combat system,[11] accomplished by using three primary buttons: attack, stun and counter[9] to emphasize the primarily physical system of combat that Batman employs. Additionally, Batman is able to use Batarangs and his Bat-Claw as supplemental combat tools that can extend combos. Countering opponents' attacks can also extend a combo; a brief indicator is shown when playing at Easy and Normal difficulties to indicate when an opponent is ready to attack. By chaining regular and counter-attacks in combos, the player can build up a special experience point multiplier, which increases further if timed well. When this surpasses a specific threshold, the player then has access to an additional special attack that can quickly take down a single foe. Batman can take damage from his foes, and can be knocked out or killed should his health bar fall too low; when combat is completed, Batman regains a portion of his health relative to the experience earned in combat. As the game progresses, Batman battles against opponents with knives and stun rods that require different tactics to deal with, as well as "Titans" that can be ridden on to attack other enemies. Certain enemies will also try to obtain firearms.

The player can also employ "Predator"-type tactics through stealth to tilt the odds to their favor. This includes silent takedowns by sneaking up on foes, dropping from overhead perches and snatching a foe into mid-air, or using the explosive gel to knock foes off their feet. Some areas feature sections that require the player to employ these tactics to avoid alerting Joker's henchmen and failing to meet an objective. Harder areas, such as the "Extreme" challenge maps, put explosives on gargoyles generally used to escape out of sight, requiring players to find other means of taking down opponents with stealth.

The Joker attacks Gotham City's Mayor's office but is foiled by Batman, who escorts him to Arkham Asylum. Due to a recent fire at Gotham City's Blackgate Prison, many members of the Joker's gang have been temporarily relocated to Arkham. As Batman accompanies the guards taking the Joker inside, the asylum's security is overridden by Harley Quinn, allowing the Joker to escape and take control of the facility. Batman quickly realizes that these events have been part of the Joker's plan and that the Joker had bribed a security guard to help him escape and kidnap Commissioner Gordon. The Joker threatens to detonate bombs scattered around Gotham City should anyone attempt to enter Arkham, forcing Batman to work alone; however, he is able to rely on Oracle who helps guide him through the asylum over the radio. Batman is able to gain access to a Batcave he created on the island. i repeat

After being rescued from Harley Quinn, Gordon reveals to Batman the location of Bane, who has been experimented on by Dr. Penelope Young, one of the Asylum's doctors. Following a fight with Bane, Batman learns that the Joker is seeking a chemical called Titan created by Dr. Young that is being produced at the asylum. The compound is based on the Venom drug that gives Bane his super strength, though the Titan formula is much more potent. The Joker plans to use the Titan formula on the various Blackgate inmates to create an army of abnormally powerful henchmen.

Batman discovers the location of the Titan formula, but after failing to save Dr. Young, sets out to rescue Warden Quincy Sharp, who has been taken hostage by Quinn. After saving the Warden and defeating Quinn, Batman meets with Poison Ivy to discover the cure to the Titan strain. Ivy reveals that the plants used to synthesize the cure are stored deep in the lair of Killer Croc. Batman ventures down to Croc's Lair and acquires the ingredients while evading Croc's attempts to foil his plan. After Batman collects enough of the antidote, he sets off a trap to defeat Croc before returning to the Batcave. While creating the antidote for titan, Batman only has enough time to synthesize one dose before Poison Ivy's Titan-infused plants destroy the Batcave's computer.

With the stability of Arkham Island in balance, Batman ventures to the Botanical Garden to defeat Poison Ivy and prevent further destruction of the island. After destroying the mutated plant life and defeating Ivy, the Joker invites Batman to his "party", where Batman sees the Joker holding Scarface, sitting on a throne of mannequins. The Joker then reveals that he has recaptured Gordon and attempts to shoot Gordon with a Titan-filled dart. Batman jumps in front of it, taking the injection himself. Batman attempts to resist the change, after which an upset Joker shoots himself with the Titan gun, becoming a massive monster. In his new form, the Joker proudly displays himself to news helicopters and publicly challenges Batman to fight. Joker tries to persuade Batman to stop resisting the Titan formula and change into a monster, urging him to show the world what a freak Batman really is. Batman refuses, and uses the antidote on himself. The Joker, angered and confused at his decision, begins his assault on Batman with a slew of henchmen and even fighting him personally. Eventually, Batman defeats him and The Joker and all of the henchmen and security officers affected by the Titan strain revert back to their original states. Joker is taken back to his cell and armed Gotham police officers slowly regain control of the city. As Batman is leaving Arkham, a call about Two-Face is overheard on the radio. i have repeated.The game opens with Batman returning the Joker to blackgate via the Batmobile. Upon arrival, you'll be greeted by mayor Quincy Sharp who currently runs gotham and blackgate. Batman hands the Joker over to gotham's personnel who strap him to an upright table on wheels. You'll take control of the Dark Knight here. Credits will roll as you simply follow the guards as they wheel the Joker into the prison. Eventually you'll arrive just outside the security Cells when they refuse to let Batman go any further. Once Batman is lock out of the cells, the Joker makes his escape. During this scene Batman will break into the security Cells where you will resume control.

Once inside the security Cells, the Joker's trap will be sprung. The cells will be unlocked and goons will flood out to ambush Batman. This will act as your tutorial for fighting. Press the Strike button to punch and kick your enemies. You can use the control stick along with this to direct your attacks. The idea being that Batman can fight numerous enemies at once. You can punch one guy, kick another, then elbow a third in rapid succession. Doing so will build up combos which in turn earn you more Experience Points. Earned Experience Points (XP) level Batman up. As he levels up, you'll be able to upgrade new abilities to become the ultimate avenger.

Defeat the first set of thugs to only be rewarded with another set to beat up. Watch for the lightning bolts to appear over any goon's head. When it does, it means he's about to hit you. As soon as you spot this, tap the Counter button to perform a counter attack. This not only prevents you from taking damage, but can also be integrated into a combo to keep it going.

Once you defeat the guards, you'll be free to move on but you should complete a few Riddles first. Arkham Asylum is littered with 130 "Riddles". Most of these are simply collectibles that you just need to find but some are more riddle-like. Spirits of joker , Riddler Trophies, Joker Teeth joker baloons,gotham cameras, Audio Tapes tyger cameras riddler wind up teeth, and others are all considered Riddles. For everything you find or complete, you'll be rewarded with XP for you troubles. Gaining extra XP is well worth hunting for these hidden gems. Don't pass them up.

Begin by simply turning around (away from the direction in which the Joker took off in). There is a ventilation shaft just to the left of the ramp. Activating Detective Mode will cause the vent shafts to glow orange. Pry the grate from the vent, then Crouch and crawl into the air duct. Here you'll find your first Riddler Trophy.

Now head up the ramp toward the direction of the Joker. Investigate the guard station on the left to see 3 Joker Teeth toys rattling around on the ground. Target each of them with your Batarang (one at a time for the time being or quick batarangs ) for faster results, and destroy them by throwing Batarangs at them. Again, destroying these are part of the Riddler's Challenge. They also give you XP for breaking them and unlock secrets later. Leave the security Cells and enter the west Corridor.

Processing Corridor

As you round the first corner take out another set of Joker Teeth hopping around. Proceed down the corridor and defeat the next set of goons then proceed to the intersection and take a left. Smash the set of Joker Teeth as you approach and talk to allen Burlov who's standing in front of a locked door. Afterwords, turn around and head down the opposite way to the right. You'll be introduced to the Oracle whom Batman radios. She'll act as your informant and keep you up to speed on the outside world. Make your way to the code red Pacification area.

Patient Pacification

Talk to Zach Franklin who'll inform you that Zsasz has taken a prisoner and will fry him if he sees anyone get close to him. Make your way up the stairs to find a balcony overlooking the room with Zsasz. Talk to the guard up here and then use Detective Mode to spot the gargoyles over head. Grapple to the closest gargoyle then continue to Grapple to the one in the very back center of the room. Rotate the camera while perched on the stone creature and look down at Zsasz. When the blue bat symbol appears over Zsasz, Glide Kick him by holding down the Strike button. Batman will swoop down and kick the unsuspecting Zsasz. He's not out yet though. As soon as you land, press the Crouch button and the Counter button at the same time to execute a Ground Takedown before Zsasz can get up. This will disable Zsasz and save his hostage.

After taking out Zsasz you'll get a message from the one and only Harley Quinn. Things are getting more serious here than back at arkham island. There are two vent shafts in this room. First, pry open the one to the back; it only opens into a tiny air duct and a Riddler Trophy. Now go pry open the next vent and crawl up the slope. Continue through this duct and you'll find yet another Riddler Trophy along the way. Eventually you'll come to the end of the duct. Kick it open then drop down to find yourself back in the west Corridor. Go to the right and follow Eddie Burlow into the alphacation area, which is now unlocked.


Batarang the 3 sets of Joker Teeth as you follow Burlov. You'll come to another locked door where people on the other side can be heard screaming due to the Joker Toxin being released. Look up to see a ledge and grapple point above you. Climb up here then move into the toxin room. You'll be well above the toxin as long as you stay on these platforms. Save the first guard who's hanging from the ledge near you.

Leave No Man BehindSave the 2 Arkham guards and the prisoner from falling into the toxin below to earn this Achievement/Trophy.

Now, hold the Run button down as you head toward the next platform. With this button held down, you'll automatically Jump. Land on the next platform then Grapple up above and save the second guard who's barely hanging on. Jump and glide to the next and final platform. Here you'll find a escaped prisoner hanging from the ledge who you should also save.

Turn your Detective Mode on and look below you at the lower area. You're looking for the two fans which are turned off. In between them is the power switch (follow the highlighted cables). Target this power switch with your Batarang and throw one at it to turn the power back on.

With the fans running again, they will ventilate the room and clear it of Joker Toxin. Hop down into the room once it's clear and smash the 5 sets of Joker Teeth strewn about. Look for the grated flooring in one of the alcoves. You can lift up the grate and crawl underneath to collect another Riddler Trophy.

Secure Treatment Transfer

Leave the alpha area and follow the green arrows along the floor of the Transfer isolation. Be sure to smash the 4 sets of Joker Teeth on your way to the Secure Treatment Transfer. You'll find the Joker in here and be introduced to one of his new goons.

BOSS: Deformed Henchman[5]Here the Joker will release one of his mutated goons on you. This monstrosity is twice the size of Batman and twice the strength. You can't simply run up and start punching and kicking him. This creature will eat Batman for lunch if he's not smart about this fight.Keep your distance from the deformed thug. The most important thing to learn here is to Evade. Double tap the Run button and press a direction to make Batman dive out of the way. This will prove to be invaluable throughout the game. If the creature happens to pick up a body from the ground, be ready to dive out of the way as it will hurl the limp body at you. Square up with the beast from a distance. When it starts to run at you, Quick Throw a Batarang (double tap the Aim button) at its face then quickly dive out of the way. The thug will cover his eyes and then run right into a wall. This will damage him quite a bit and stun him for a short time. Run towards him to deliver a quick 3 to 5 hit combo then quickly dart away. The creature will regain focus and slam the ground causing a radial shock wave around him.Put some distance between you and him again and repeat this strategy until he falls down for good.

The Deformed Henchman boss fight.Once you have defeated the hulking goon, you'll hear a guard calling to you from a nearby guard station. Before you go to him however, visit the opposite guard station and grab the Riddler Trophy from within. Now go talk to the guard where you'll learn that the Joker has captured Commissioner Gordon using one of Arkham's own men, Boles.


Batman needs to rescue Gordon before hunting down the Joker. Leave the Secure Treatment Transfer and use the Transfer Loop to make your way back to the security Cells (where you first met up with Gordon). Enter the control room and use your Detective Mode to search for a clue. While in this mode, the clue will be highlighted to make it easier to see. The clue you'll find here is taylor's blood . Scan the blood by holding down Run while in Detective Mode. This will analyze the blood and pick up the scent of his scent left behind.

While in Detective Mode, you can see further traces of taylor's scent. Follow these scents down through the Transfer Loop. At the end of the Transfer Loop, before you enter the Secure Transit area, you'll find a reception desk and 7 sets of Joker Teeth chattering around. Once you've smashed them, head into the Secure Transit section. Here you'll trigger another cut-scene in which Quinn drops an elevator on you. Talk to jack taylor (the guard you saved from the elevator) and then head up the stairs into the small office to collect the Harley Quinn Patient Interview Tape #1 on the desk here.

Head back down to the ground level and then look up. Use your Grapple Gun to climb the elevator shaft above you. Grapple and shimmy your way up the shaft. You'll eventually reach a small passage you'll need to crawl through. Look for the baloons. break this to acquire the first concept art

Now, Grapple up to the final ledge above and you'll spot five enemy goons just hanging around. Two of these thugs are carrying tasers. Climb up and quickly engage the henchmen. Watch out for their attacks (lightning bolts over their heads) and Counter attack them when they do. Take them all out then smash the single set of Joker Teeth with a Batarang. Continue through the air duct to enter the Cell Block Transfer section.

When you pop out of the other end of the air duct, you'll find three inmates armed with guns around the next corner. You can see them while in Detective Mode. Engaging 4 enemies with firearms head on is essentially suicide. Batman's got to use his brain and stealth to his advantage. Grapple up to the gargoyles over head. Continue to Grapple to the last gargoyle in the back of the room behind the armed thugs. Drop down to the ground behind them and hold the Crouch button to sneak up behind the first goon. When close enough and with the Crouch button pressed, tap the Counter button to preform a Silent Takedown. Repeat this for the next 3 unsuspecting fools.

Now, sneak your way up the stairs to the 5th enemy who's inside a security room. Sneak up behind him and use Silent Takedown to disable him. Crawl through the vent here to enter the Intensive Treatment Lobby.

Intensive Treatment Lobby

Crawl out of the vent here and while crouching, sneak up behind the inmate patrolling the area in front of you and use the Silent Takedown on the fool. Quickly Grapple up to a gargoyle overhead. This will allow you to get a lay of the land. Use Detective Mode to scope out the remaining 5 enemies in the room. You can Grapple around this room from gargoyle to gargoyle to get better vantage points. When the goons are separated, either Glide Kick and then Ground Takedown them or perform an Inverted Takedown.

Once you've taken out these initial enemies, the Joker will send in 8 more armed inmates. When dealing with these armed baddies, the idea is to always pick them off one by one. Drop down, take out one, then Grapple back up into the shadows above. Once you've cleared the room successfully, head into the offices in the middle and pick up the Harley Quinn Patient Interview Tape #2 from the desk. Now proceed to the far side of the room and up the ladder to the raised hallway. Smash the 4 sets of Joker Teeth up here. Approach the end of the hallway to find the body of taylor.

Batman will now receive a message from the Riddler. He'll challenge Batman to solve all the "riddles" he's littered gotham city with. The first one he challenges you with can be solved right here in this hallway.

  • Don't cut yourself on this well deseved observed portrait.
    • Head back towards the ladder and look up to the left to spot the portrait of jim gordon hanging on the wall. Hold the Detective Mode button down to scan the area while looking at this wall hanging to effectively solve this riddle.

Solving this first riddle will trigger William North, an blackgate guard, to unlock the door to the Utility Corridor for you. Don't head that way yet, there's one more riddle to solve here.

  • A puzzle has many sides, but only some are seen with my vision.
    • With Detective Mode on, look around the windows of the offices in the middle of the gotham medical Treatment Lobby. You're looking to put together a "?". Its body will be separated from the dot. Find the body on a window of the office then move the camera around until you've lined up the dot on the wall just underneath the body. When it looks like a "?" scan it by holding down the Detective Mode button to complete this riddle.

Now enter the the Utility Corridor that the guard, William North, opened for you.

  • You don't know jack about joker. Tune in to find out.
    • When you enter the locker room, listen for the sound of a radio and find it. Go into first person view and look at the dial on the radio and locate the name Jack Ryder. Scan this to complete the riddle.

Find the small room at the end of the locker room. Crawl through the vent here to find you way outside.

gotham city


Follow the narrow passage and Grapple up to the ledge above. Approach the cliff to get a nice vantage point of Arkham Island. Glide down to the guards near the archway and talk to Louie Green. After the conversation you'll over hear the Joker command all the nearby thugs to go destroy the Batmobile. After his announcement, the Oracle will update your GOTHAM CITY map and point out the location of the Batmobile which is in gotham North (you are in gotham East at the moment). Before you run off to save your vehicle however, you should take a few moments to solve some of this area's riddles to gain some XP.

Go to the cliffs to the right of the bar and pick up the Riddler Trophy from the ledge here. Turn around and now find the guard tower just past the night tower. Grapple up here and pick up the Joker's Patient Interview Tape #1.

Go stand in front of the hotel and look at its main entrance. Around to the left you'll find a walled in area. Climb over this wall to find an enclosed courtyard. There is a patient interview inside, along the right side of the courtyard.It is jokers 2nd. Now run to the back. Grapple up into the archway above and pick up the Riddler Trophy behind the railway. Now Grapple out and up to the skyscraper directly above this last trophy. Up on the roof here you'll find the next Riddler Trophy.

Grapple up the clock tower from here. On the highest level, on the west side you'll find another Riddler Trophy (this will unlock the Victor Zsasz character trophy).

  • Gotham's greatest manors are towers.
    • Look across the water from the clock tower towards Gotham City. Go into first person view and look for the Wayne tower along the skyline. It is the building with the "W" on it. Scan the tower to solve this riddle.
  • My challenges appear to those with the correct fit in life.
    • On the top ledge of the clock tower, look down and to the south. Use Detective Mode to see the body of the question mark is on the roof below. The dot is on the ledge of the platform. Line the two up and scan them to complete this riddle.

Now drop down onto the rooftop below by the giant question mark. To the right you'll find yet another Riddler Trophy.

Make your way over to the cemetery in between the Botanical Gardens and the Arkham Mansion. Enter the small shack in the cemetery and pick up the Riddler Trophy from within (this unlocks the Frank Boles character trophy). Now run to the back of the cemetery and pick up the Riddler Trophy hidden in the tall grass.

On your way out of the cemetery, you can solve this area's riddle.

  • The legacy of this family has been well and truly buried.
    • Near the cemetery entrance, you'll find the tombstone and dug-up grave of martha and thomas wayne carved onto it. Scan the headstone to complete this riddle.

Head around past the medical treatment building towards the entrance to gotham North. Climb up to the very top of the guard tower on the right and pick up the Riddler Trophy here (this unlocks the Blackgate Prisoners character trophy).

Once you've solved all the riddles you possibly can at this point, it's time to go protect the Batmobile.

Protect the Batmobile

[6]Make your way towards gotham North (use the map for guidance). There's a small connecting area in between gotham East and North you'll have to pass through. When you enter the smaller area, you'll see an ambulance and a guard taking cover behind it. Use your Detective Mode to spot the 1 armed inmate on the other side. You do not want to engage them head-on of course. Make your way to the back of the ambulance and Grapple up to the ledge above the goon. Drop down the back side of this ledge behind the thug and Crouch. Sneak up and perform a Silent Takedown on that thug.

Once you've taken out that 1 inmate, head into the gotham North area. Run up the street towards the Batmobile and the thugs thrashing it. Quick Throw some Batarangs as you rush them and jump kick into the middle of the group. From the middle of them it's easier to combo around in a circle. Of course, if you see lightning bolts over one of their heads, Counter them before they hit you. Defeat all the thugs here to successfully protect the Batmobile. Once the area is cleared, search the trunk of the Batmobile to collect the Explosive Gel.

This new device allows you spray a surface with gel that you can then detonate. There are tons of breakable walls and floors that you can use the gel on to destroy and clear the path. Use Detective Mode to spot these blue transparent surfaces with the orange explosive symbol on them. Another fun tactic to employ during stealth combat is to down an enemy, then quickly spray the ground with the gel where the enemy lies. Now disappear and wait for his fellow goons to investigate his body. When they are around it, detonate the gel to knock them out.

Gotham North

Once you've saved the Batmobile and acquire the Explosive Gel from the trunk, and it is repaired it'll be time to do a bit of detective work. Use Detective Mode around the Batmobile to spot the tobacco Commissioner Gordon dropped. Scan the tobacco to acquire its content and scent so that you may track it. The trail will lead you to gotham West, but it's not time to go there just yet. There are a few riddles to be solved here in Arkham North first.

Just north of the Batmobile on the dry street, you'll find a breakable square along the ground (use Detective Mode to easily see it). Set Explosive Gel on this square then detonate it to reveal a Riddler Trophy to collect.which unlocks batmobiles character trophy.

Now hop onto the rooftop just to the right of the Batmobile and blow a hole in the weak portion of the ceiling. Drop in and interrogate the riddler henchman which will give you riddler secrets. This will fill in your in-game map with floating question marks around where unsolved riddles are. Note that some of them will require other gadgets to collect so you won't be able to get all of them just yet.

Climb up into the guard tower on the left and you'll find Joker's Patient Interview Tape #3 on the desk. Now Grapple up to the roof of this guard tower and pick up the Riddler Trophy up here.

Drop down and Grapple onto the roof of the other guard tower. Look north and you will see another trophy on a plateau ahead of you. You cannot grapple to it, you can only Glide to it. So, Glide to the plateau from the roof of the guard tower and collect the Riddler Trophy from this hard to reach spot.

Head to the half destroyed building to the northwest of this area. Inside the building on the ground level tucked away in a corner you'll find another Riddler Trophy (this unlocks the Aaron Cash character trophy). From here, face north and Grapple up to the second level and scan the Chronicle of Arkham tablet here.

  • Now I see it, now we don't!
    • On the ground near the map you just got, you'll find an archway of this ruined building. With your Detective Mode on, stand just outside the building and look up. Here you'll see the body of a question mark on the underside of the top of the archway. Line this up with the dot which is on the ceiling above it. Once you've lined it up, scan this question mark to solve this riddle.
  • the circus twins saw it, can you see it?
    • To the very north of this area you'll find the gated entrance to blackgate. Just to the right of it is 2 hammers Scan this to solve the riddle.

Head back down towards the Intensive Treatment building and Grapple onto the roof along the west side of it. Here you'll find another Riddler Trophy (this will unlock the batman character trophy) near the middle of the roof.

Once you've "solved" all these riddles, it's time to follow Gordon's trail. Use Detective Mode to follow the tobacco smoke from the Batmobile to the doors leading to GOTHAM West. These will be locked, but just to the right of it is a breakable wall. Spray the wall with the Explosive Gel and detonate it to clear a path. Follow this tunnel to the door and enter gotham West.

gotham West

Make your way down the down the corridor and out into the gotham North area. Turn around and Grapple up to the ledge above the door you just came through to find another Riddler Trophy. From this perch, spot the two Blackgate prisoners ahead of you. Glide Kick down to drop one then quickly perform a Ground Takedown on him. The other prisoner is likely to attack you during this so tap the Counter button to make him eat fist.

  • Do you see what I can see? No? Then maybe I am in a stronger position.
    • Grapple up to the balcony above the entrance to the Penitentiary. In Detective Mode, look down to see the body of the question mark. You'll need to line this up with the dot which is on a railing of the balcony. Line it up the scan it to solve this riddle.

Head to the guard tower in front of the Penitentiary and directly underneath it you'll find another Riddler Trophy. To the left of the guard tower you'll find a small ravine where a waterfall is located. On the floor of this ravine is a Riddler Trophy. Head back under the guard tower towards the waterfront. By the docks, directly in front of the Penitentiary, you'll be able to Grapple up to a breakable wall and then use the Explosive Gel to reach the Chronicle of Arkham behind it.

Find the small shack on the dock and pick up Joker's Patient Interview Tape #3 from within. Now Grapple onto the roof of this shack to pick up another Riddler Trophy.

It's now time to resume tracking Gordon's trail. In Detective Mode, follow the tobacco signatures to the Medical Facility. There are six Blackgate prisoners standing guard here. Toss a Batarang or two to get things started then rush in and attack the others. Defeat the goons using combos and then smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth with Batarangs.

Step into the Medical Facility to trigger a small scene with Harley Quinn. You'll be locked out and need to find another way inside. Head back outside and Grapple up to the roof of the Medical Facility. Make your way around the outer edge of the roof along the waterfront side. On the southwestern side of the roof you'll find another Riddler Trophy sitting in plain sight (this will unlock the Batmobile character trophy).

Flip your Detective Mode on and go to the opposite side of the roof and to find the breakable wall. Blow it up with the Explosive Gel and then enter the Medical Facility.

Medical Facility

Maintenance Access

Once inside the Maintenance Access of the Medical Facility, hop the fence and head into the next room. Crawl through the air duct located in here. Follow the vents to a fork in the shaft. Go right to collect a Riddler Trophy then go back and take the other direction. Follow the ventilation system to the Sanatorium.


In this room you'll find five gun wielding prisoners who are holding a group of doctors hostage. From the ventilation shaft, crawl to the right. Use your Detective Mode to keep an eye on all the enemies. Don't down into the small behind the breakable wall with an inmate standing in front of it. Spray Explosive Gel on the back side of the wall then Grapple up to the gargoyles above. There's another enclosed room opposite of this one with a breakable ceiling and another inmate underneath. Spray some gel here then Grapple back up to the gargoyles and then detonate the gels to take out those two enemies.

The remaining three thugs will wander around the Sanatorium at random. You'll need to be patient and pick them off one at a time. Once you've cleared the room of enemies, go talk to the doctors. Now it's time to solve some riddles.

In the small room with the breakable ceiling, grab Riddler's Patient Interview Tape #1 from the desk. Drop down to the lowest level of the Sanatorium and smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth chattering around. Destroy the southeast breakable wall here and collect the Riddler Trophy from behind it.

Remain on the lowest level and head up to the northwest portion of this area.

  • Tick! Tock! News flash! Someone is not getting out of here alive.
    • In the northwest lowest level of the Sanatorium you'll find a broken cell littered with bones. Scan the cell to solve this riddle.

There is a breakable floor along the west wall of the second level here (almost in the middle). Destroy this floor and drop down to find a Chronicle of Arkham on the wall of this vent system.

  • A question can only be answered from a new perspective? Don't you agree?
    • There is another breakable section of floor on the second level. This one can be blown open and looks down at the lowest floor. Use Detective Mode to see the question mark along the rim of the hole. There's a dot on the floor below at a slanted angle. Line the two up and scan them to complete this riddle.

For those how want to get to the mission at hand, drop down to the lowest level of the Sanatorium and then head through the doors to the north to enter the Upper Corridor. Those who want some XP via a couple of riddles, head through the door to the south which is located on the second level of the room and head into the Medical Foyer.

Medical Foyer

  • Is the generosity of out benefactors on the Wayne?
    • Go to the southern section of this hallway to find the front desk in disarray (this is where you just ran into Quinn). Find the plaque on the wall here with Wayne's name on it and scan it to solve the riddle (this will unlock the Alfred Pennyworth character trophy).

You'll also find Riddler's Patient Interview Tape #2 on the desk Harley Quinn was sitting at earlier. Once you've solved both riddles, head back through the Sanatorium and then into the Upper Corridor.

Upper Corridor

The Upper Corridor leads to you to three separate areas and has three different colored lines leading to each. First follow the yellow line straight ahead towards the X-Ray Room. Use your Detective Mode to spot the three thugs around the final corner of the hallway. Take Corner Cover by crouching near the corner plus pressing Run. Target the goons with a batarang or two (depending on your upgrades) and then throw some and rush the prisoners and take them out. Now enter the X-Ray Room.

Here you'll find 12 armed Blackgate prisoners holding Dr. Young hostage inside a small room in the middle of the larger one. Use your Detective Mode to see them through the 4 walls and to see the breakable walls. Spray Explosive Gels on wall in front of you and then move around to the left andright and south to find more to spray. Don't detonate the gel until you've applied gel to all walls. Now blast the walls down to take out all five goons at the same time.

Step inside to talk to Dr. Young. Now Grapple onto the roof of this room to collect the Riddler Trophy in the center. Now step back out into the Upper Corridor.Unlocking Dr Young trophy

Surgery Room

Make your way back through the Upper Corridor. Along the way you'll find a Joker present. It'll burst open as you near it and give you 3 sets of Joker Teeth: to smash with a batarang. Keep an eye along the right wall for a ventilation shaft. Crawl inside and you'll find a Riddler Trophy to collect. Now follow the red line on the floor to the Surgery room.

Enter Surgery to find Dr. Chen strapped to a electric chair. Of course this is a trap. Blackgate prisoners will drop down into the room and you'll need to fight your way through them. Watch out as they might pull something from the wall and use it as a weapon. Weapon wielding enemies can block so use your Cape Stun to create an opening so you can attack them. Once you've defeated all the enemies, Dr. Chen will be freed.

Patient Observation

You'll find another party box from the Joker just outside Surgery. It'll burst open with another 7 sets of Joker Teeth:. Smash them with batarangs and now make your way to Observation (follow the black line). Be sure to take Corner Cover at the last corner so that you can throw a batarang at the inmates guarding the door. Rush the other and introduce him to your fist. Take them both out then enter Observation.

Again, you'll see two more Blackgate inmates in front of you. Batarang one or both of them then run up and finish them off. Aaron Cash and Dr. Kellerman are locked in a room you can see into. The Joker released Joker Toxin on the other side however so they are trapped in there. Look up above and Grapple to the air ducts high above. Crawl through the vent here to enter the main observation along the ceiling. As you can see it's filled with Joker Toxin. You'll need to activate three fans in total here. Each fan you activate will lower the toxin more.

More around to the right and look back to the left under your platform. Use Detective Mode here to help spot these control panels to the fans. Throw a batarang at this first here to turn the fan on. Now run and jump to the next platforms as they are revealed by the lowering toxin. Go to the back of the room and out onto the platform to the back middle. Turn around the hit then control panel under the last platform you jumped from. This will lower the toxin even more. Now turn around and batarang the rope that the goon is hanging from. He'll fall and smash the roof of small room below him. Hop over the last platform and use a batarang to hit the final fan control inside this small room. Now that the toxin is completely clear, Cash and Dr. Kellerman will be freed.

  • Was this fire fly too hot off the press?
    • Enter the small room that you drop the inmate through and scan the newspaper clippings taped to the cabinet door to solve this puzzle.

Now go into the control room that Cash was stuck in. Collect joker's Patient Interview Tape #5 from the table in here. Step back out and Grapple on top of this room. There are 5 sets of Joker Teeth: in this area. One on top of this office and the other two are by each of the first two fan control panels.


It's now time to make your way back to the Sanatorium. Along the Upper Corridor you'll encounter another present from the Joker. This one however also contains a knife wielding con. Use the Cape Stun to break his blocks and then beat the snot out of him. Smash the 1 set of Joker Teeth that pop out of the box and then head back to the Sanatorium.

Reenter the Sanatorium to trigger a small scene with Dr. Young and Cash. Your conversation will be cut short by some Blackgate prisoners who appear. Pick them off one by one when they separate from each other. Once you've taken all three out, walk over to the elevator, smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth, and then get into the elevator.


After the short elevator ride down, you'll trigger a small cutscene which will hint at the upcoming villain. You'll be locked out so you'll need to find another way in. Use your Detective Mode to find the breakable wall to the left. Blow it open and follow this passage around to the Lower Corridor. Keep following the only available path and you'll soon find the body of Commissioner Gordon. Continue down the Lower Corridor and enter the Morgue at the end.

Explore the empty morgue and then leave the morgue only to find yourself still in the morgue. Examine all three body bags that are now on the center tables. After another brief scene, you'll find the morgue has had a bit of a make over. Make your way out onto the various shards of the Medical facility. As you hop out onto the furthest one, the towering Scarecrow will appear. His intense gaze will kill you instantly and you'll need to avoid it at all costs.

Scarecrow will float in the middle of the platforms and spin in a clockwise motion searching for you with his evil gaze. You need to make your way around in a counter-clockwise motion jumping from platform to platform and taking cover to avoid his sight. Watch the Scarecrow carefully and time your sprints to each piece of cover just after he passes you. You'll need to crouch behind half walls as well.

You'll eventually need to run and cling to a small ledge and shimmy around this column. Don't pull yourself up until the Scarecrow's gaze passes by again. Continue around and you'll soon find yourself standing behind a column of drawers from the morgue. To your right is a breakable wall. Stay behind the shelter until his gaze passes then dart out and spray the wall with some Explosive Gel. Now run back to cover and detonate it. This will attract the attention of the Scarecrow who swing around and peer around the column. Remain calm and behind the cover. When he goes to peer around the left side, make a break for the next platform which you cleared the way for with the gel. Quickly climb up to the higher platforms, of course taking cover when needed. In the end you need to run out to the bat signal at the end of the platform and point it at the Scarecrow to defeat him and wake up.


After defeating the Scarecrow, you'll awake inside the Morgue.In front of the city clock

  • What silent killer of the oceans can be found in a tiny jar?
    • Look for the clear jar on the tray near the tables in the middle. Move around so you can see the words "The Great White Shark" written on the side of the jar and scan it to complete this riddle.

Now you can leave the Morgue.

Lower Corridor follow the green spray painted arrows down the hallways. You'll discover that Scarecrow's poison had you believe something that wasn't real. Proceed to follow the arrows. As you approach the spray painted door, more goons will pop out at you. Take the three thugs out (remember to Cape Stun the armored one). Follow the arrows up the small set of stairs, smash the 2 sets of Joker Teeth and then enter the morgue Chamber.

Experimental Chamber

Make your way down the narrow hallway here as the Joker makes you a deal. Grab the Secrets Map from the table.

Now pry the vent cover from the air duct on the right and crawl through it. There are four armed Blackgate prisoners on the lower level and Harley Quinn up in the office over looking the rest of the room. You need to take out all four thugs silently without any of them being alerted and then take down Quinn. Two prisoners will be standing in place while the other two will patrol the area. Keep Detective Mode on so you can keep an eye on the wandering goons.

Crawl through the vents and you'll pop out near the motionless thugs. Perform a Silent Takedown on the nearest one then crawl through the vent opposite of you to get behind the other motionless enemy. Pick up the Riddler Trophy in the vent then take the second thug down. Needless to say, you should be crouching at all times in here. You still have two more prisoners to take out. Watch their walking patterns and sneak up behind each of them separately and take them out.

With all four enemies down, it's now time to go after Harley and save Gordon. Head up the stairs to the south and Grapple onto the roof of the office. Pick up the Riddler Trophy here (unlocks the Silent warrior challenge map) then stand on the glass ceiling and take Harley Quinn out.

BOSS: Bane[7]After the cutscene you'll have to face off against Bane who was set as a trap for Batman by the Joker. Bane has two main attacks; he'll tear a chunk of the wall out and hurl it at you or he'll charge at you like a bull and attempt to run you over. If you haven't learned how to Evade yet, you best learn it quickly (double tap Run and press a direction). This will make Batman dive out of the way.

If you look at Bane's health bar in the upper right hand corner of the screen, you'll notice it is broken into 3 sections. The idea being that you lower his health and empty a section of his health bar, then pull a hose out of his backpack device which will prevent him from regaining that health. How do you weaken him though?

Facing Bane head on is a suicide mission. Instead keep you distance and wait for him to charge you. You'll know when he's about to charge when you see him flex and hunch forward. When he does this, Quick Throw a batarang at him when he starts his run then dive out of the way. This will blind him and he'll run right into the wall. This takes about half a section's health away and stuns him. However Bane is still deadly when stunned. He'll stumble around blinding swinging his arms and it's best to keep your distance until a health section is empty. Repeat this action the next time he charges you. When you see that a portion of his meter is empty, quickly rush at him and tap the Strike button. Batman will jump onto Bane's back and pull a hose out of him. With one down, you only have two more to go.

The Joker however is not going to make this easy on you. Once you pull the first hose, he'll order some Blackgate prisoners to join in the fight. This complicate things quite a bit. You actually want to focus on taking all these enemies out before reengaging Bane. However, he's not just going to wait around. Bane will continue his cycle of throwing rocks at you and charging at you. You just need to keep an eye on him and dodge his incoming attacks while you take out the inmates. The good news is, Bane's attacks can and often do hurt the other enemies. Get him to help you clear the room by luring him through a crowd of prisoners while you dive out of the way.

Once you've taken out all the Blackgate prisoners, return your full attention to Bane. Watch for his charge and batarang him in the face then dive out of the way. Empty the second health bar section by letting him run into the wall then charge in yourself and rip out the second hose.

After the second hose has been removed, Joker will command more thugs to join the fight. Repeat your strategy from before and focus on them first while avoiding Bane. Once they have been cleared, run Bane into the wall a few times and then rip out that final hose to defeat him and trigger another scene.

Arkham Island, Part 2

Arkham West

After the battle with Bane you'll find yourself back in GOTHAM West standing on the docks. Make your way towards Gotham North. There will be a couple of groups of enemies along the way. Beat the snot out of them then proceed into the passage way that leads to the northern part of Arkham Island. Smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth: in here and then enter Arkham North.

Arkham North

Make your way around to the east side of the Intensive Treatment building and then cut south along the side of it. You'll find a tunnel here that will lead you to "Dead Man's Point" but before you head down it, Grapple up to the ledge above, and collect the Riddler Trophy from the alcove up here. Drop back down and head into the tunnel. Grapple up to the ledge above the broken ladder and scan the riddler trophy here.

Follow the passage through the door and into a larger room that features a pile of bones in the middle. Use your Detective Mode to locate a breakable wall and use the Explosive Gel to destroy it so you can collect the Riddler Trophy from behind it. Continue to the ledge where a small scene will be trigger. Batman will leap off the ledge and enter the Batcave.


The Batcave

Run through the passage and Glide to the center platform of the Batcave. Approach the computer on the upper level to trigger a scene. After the scene you'll be given a new gadget, the Batclaw. The batclaw can be use to attach to vents, objects, or even enemies. Once you've attached to something interactive, you can pull on it. This means you can open vents that are located off the ground by pulling the cover off from them. Another fun trick is to find an enemy near a ledge and use the batclaw to pull them off it.

Go back down to the lower platform and look to the north. Use the Batclaw to pull the crates from the opposite platform and then jump to and enter the Old Sewer at the end.

Old Sewer

Follow this passage around to find yourself on a narrow ledge. Look up and use the Batclaw again to pull the vent off the wall above you. Grapple into this air duct and crawl through. Turn left when you drop out of the vent and sneak up behind the Blackgate prisoner and take him out. Now turn around and find the Chronicle of Arkham near the air duct and scan it.

Make your way around the bend to find a small group of prisoners. Fight your way through them and defeat them all. Pick up Killer Croc Patient Interview Tape #1 from the ground just ahead. Use the Batclaw to pull the vent from the wall above and climb in to collect the Riddler Trophy. If you step around the corner to the south here and attempt to open the door, you'll trigger a tiny scene foreshadowing a future showdown.

Now head to the north. Before you destroy the Joker Teeth on the ground, turn to left of the first set of teeth and destroy the wall with gel so that you can collect the Riddler Trophy. Batarang the 3 sets of Joker Teeth along this corridor. Go through the door at the end.

Main Sewer Junction

Here you'll find yourself in a massive chamber filled with decrepit columns, archways, and platforms. You cannot use your grapple in very many places heres as most of the surfaces are not strong enough to support your weight. You'll need to navigate this chamber the old fashion way; a lot of jumping and climbing.

Begin by following the ledge around to the right. Climb into the hollowed out column and jump to the platforms to the west. Jump to the farthest one and collect the Riddler Trophy (this unlocks the Bane character trophy) from behind the last column. Jump back to the previous platforms and then one further to the east. Turn north and jump to the next ledge. Cling to the almost red glowing lip of the column to your left. Shimmy around to the left and climb up into the inside of the column to collect another Riddler Trophy. Crouch and climb down by pressing the Run button then shimmy back around the platform. Jump to the next platform where you'll find and want to smash the 2 sets of Joker Teeth here. [8]Make your way up along the knocked over column. Jump to the platform with the running water and then jump to the small hollowed out column directly in front of you to pick up yet another Riddler Trophy (this unlocks the Sewer Bat challenge map). Jump back to the water platform and then climb up the second knocked over column. At the top, cling onto the small ledge to the left and shimmy around the upright column. Climb up into it along the back side and pick up the Riddler Trophy (this unlocks the Commissioner Gordon character trophy) here.

  • A Puzzle has many sides but only some are visible.
    • While standing in the column where you just picked up the previous trophy, turn your Detective Mode on and swoop the camera around to look to the west and up. You will be able to see the body of the question mark on the underside of an archway above you and the dot will be on the lip of the broken wall you are looking through. Line them up and Scan them to complete this riddle.

Shimmy back around and then jump to the platform to the south. Ignore the trophy to the right, you can't reach it just yet. Follow the passage here to the east and smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth along the way. Enter the door at the end.

Surface Access

As soon as you step into this area, you'll see Killer Croc's Patient Interview Tape #2 sitting on the crate to the left. Pick it up and then proceed to follow this passage to the breakable wall at the end. Blow it open, jump over the hole, then exit the caves through the door.

gotham, Part 3

gotham North

You'll emerge from the caves on the upper level of the half destroyed building. Turn you Detective Mode on to scope out the area before you do anything. The are now snipers in both guard towers and a group of goons on the ground in front of medical treatment. Grapple up to the closest guard tower and sneak up behind the sniper and perform a Silent Takedown. Get onto the roof and watch the other sniper. When he's looking the other way Glide to the stairs of his guard tower and then sneak up and take him out silently as well. Now feel free to drop down and take out the four thugs on the ground. Note that one of them wields two knives which means you cannot Counter him or just hit him normally, he'll always block it. Either Cape Stun him to stun him and then Strike him or build up a combo and then perform a Special Takedown on him.

Head towards gotham East and destroy the 3 sets of Joker Teeth in front of the exit. Now enter GOTHAM East

Make your way through the connecting tunnel and defeat the Blackgate prisoners that ambush you by the ambulance. Head into the main area of Arkham East. Note that there's 4 snipers here now. Grapple up to the guard tower on the left and silently dispatch the guard here. Watch the guard in the next tower and Glide over and then climb up to take him out next. Now look across to the wayne manor. There's two snipers on a ledge above the entrance. Make you way over there doing a wide turn to avoid their line of sight. Grapple up to the ledge and hand from it. Perform a Vertical Takedown on one guard and then take the last one out be whatever means you see fitting.

Drop down and smash the 2 sets of Joker Teeth in front of the main entrance of the manor. This entrance is locked however. Go to the left of the entrance and use "Detective Mode" to spot the breakable ground in front of the walled off courtyard. Set some Explosive Gel on the ground here and detonate it so you can collect the Riddler Trophy. Grapple back up to the sniper's ledge and then use the Batclaw to pull open the air duct above. Climb through this vent and enter th

MaNOR Entrance Hall

You'll enter the mansion up in the rafters of the tall hall. Use Detective Mode to spy on the three thugs down below. Notice that one of them has a gun. Use your Batarang to target the armed goon and then drop down to begin attacking the others. Defeat all three to clear the room. Go down the stairs towards the electronic barrier and turn around to the left. You'll find a vent next to the stairs. Pry it open then crawl into it to find a Riddler Trophy.

Grapple up to stand on the air vents above (behind the statue). Look up and pull down the vent cover from the ceiling and then Grapple up into this small room above. Destroy the breakable wall here and then scan the Chronicle of Arkham. Crawl through the vent here and drop into the next area.

Main Hall

Below you will be a horde of thugs. Grapple to a gargoyle and the Glide Kick down to knock one over and make your grand entrance. Combo around to them all. Never hit the same one twice in a row. Keep switching targets. Defeat all the thugs to clear the room.

  • Who is the main man in the main hall?
    • Once you've taken out all the goons here, step into the small off shoot room to the right and Scan the picture of Commissioner Gordon on the wall.

In the middle of this hall you'll find a tall statue. Pull the grate off the base of the statue and crawl inside to collect a Riddler Trophy. Behind the statue (up the stairs) you'll find 3 sets of Joker Teeth (one is inside a small guard station, pry the vent off to get inside). Do the same for the opposite guard station and collect Scarecrow's Patient Interview Tape #1.

Now stand in the center and look up. Behind the statue you'll see a ledge high in the ceiling. Grapple up here and Scan the Chronicle of Arkham you find. Drop back down and enter the door to the north west.

West Corridor

Sneak up behind the prisoner who's holding two guards hostage by the stairs in front of you. Take him out to trigger a small scene revealing the Suicide Collars. Enemies will now be wearing these collars which will sound an alarm when you knock them out and attract the attention of the others. You need to be aware of this device in the invisible predator portions of the game. Note though that you can use this to your advantage and lure other enemies into traps. After the scene, head to the west and enter the next room. gotham Records Room Here you'll find Aaron Cash and another security guard who have both been taken hostage. There are 6 armed enemies wandering about this room. Use you Detective Mode to keep an eye on them. Grapple up to the gargoyles to get a lay of the land. Begin picking them off one by one. Be sure that they are alone when you take one out. Pick them off one by one until the area has been cleared and then free Cash the guard.

Use the Batclaw to pull the grate off the vent by the southern electrical barrier. Crawl through this air duct and then drop into the room and pick up Scarecrow's Patient Interview Tape #2. Head to the far west of this records room and on the upper level you'll find another air duct. Use the Batclaw to open it then crawl through and collect the Riddler Trophy from the locked off room.

Now leave through the door to the north.

North Corridor

Go up the stairs to the right and pry the vent shaft open on your left at the top of them. Crawl through this air duct to reach a small pair of cells. Smash the two 2 sets of Joker Teeth in here.

  • Did frank go mad or was he just dizzy?
    • Enter the cell with all the circles scribbled on the wall and scan it to solve this riddle.

Now, stand in the larger room the cells open into. Look up and Grapple into the air duct up high near the ceiling. Follow this around to pop out in the upper level of North Corridor. Walk around to the southwest to collect the Riddler Trophy. Now find the vent shaft to the east and crawl through it into the next area.

Dr. Young's Office

Drop down into Young's office and sneak up behind the armed guard and perform a Silent Takedown. Quickly dispatch the other two and then you'll need to find another way into the office.

  • It'll be a cold day in hell when this snowman rises again.
    • Wander up the stairs of the office and Scan the body half sticking out of the freezer to solve this riddle.

Look up along the northern wall to see the vent above. Use the Batclaw to open it then Grapple into it and crawl through to the young doctor's office.

  • How do you mask your feelings without losing control?
    • Inside Dr. Young's office you'll find a skull mounted to the wall. Scan the skull to solve this riddle.

Now enter Detective Mode and find Dr. Young's finger prints on the door of the wall safe. Scan the prints so that you have them stored in your database. It's time to find Dr. Young.

Crawl back through the vents and some goons will kick in the door and attack you. Defeat the thugs and then grab Scarecrow's Patient Interview Tape #3. Use Detective Mode to follow the prints back into the West Wing Corridor where you'll find 3 sets of Joker Teeth that jump out of a present. Follow Dr. Young's fingerprints back through the Main Hall and into the Southern Corridor.

Southern Corridor

  • What does a bird need in the rain?
    • When you enter this room, look along the left (east) wall. There you'll find the umbrella of the Penguin. Scan it to solve the riddle.

Make your way down the corridor and smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth along the way. Look up before you round the next corner. You'll see an air duct you can Grapple on top of above you. Climb up here and then destroy the breakable wall with some Explosive Gel and then scan the Chronicle of Arkham you find here.

  • This fiendish puzzle literally appears out of thin air.
    • Stand on the edge of the air ducts and look down. You will see the body of the question mark down below while the dot is on the edge of the air duct. Line the two up and Scan them to solve this riddle.

Drop back down and take Corner Cover to spy on the two Blackgate prisoners. One of them is armed. Equip a batarang and hit the armed goon with it then rush in and engaged them. Take them out then turn around to spot the vent cover high above the floor. Use the Batclaw to pull it off the wall then Grapple up to it and collect the Riddler Trophy from within. Once you've got it, climb back out and enter the door opposite of the vent.


When you enter the Library you'll encounter a horde of thugs tearing the place apart. Attack them and be mindful of the knife wielding foes (don't Counter them, Cape Stun them). Use the Batclaw to pull the grating from the vent here and climb into the air duct to pick up another Riddler Trophy. Head down the stairs and smash the 3 sets of Joker Teeth along the way.

As you approach the hostages Joker will block your path with an electric barrier and tell you the bomb they are strapped to will go off in 2 minutes. Run back up the stairs and then Grapple up to the upper level. Look for the vent to open and crawl through. You'll have to navigate a small ventilation system to get up to the highest level of the Library. Once you pop out you'll see a large chandelier hanging in front of you. Use a batarang to cut the rope it hangs from. The chandelier will go crashing down through the glass floor below. Jump down to the bottom floor and Disarm the bomb.

Grapple all the way back up to the highest level of the Library. Pry the unopened vent open here and inside you'll find another Riddler Trophy. Now drop all the way back down to the lowest level of the Library and use Detective Mode to locate Dr. Young's fingerprints on the book she hid them in. Now Grapple back up to the original level and head through door towards the South Corridor only to end up somewhere go to the church

.Upon entering the Church, you'll be instantly charged and attacked. You can put a quick end to this encounter simply by performing a Counter on the incoming attack. This will trigger a conversation with the devious Harley Quinn. She'll then leave you with her armed 8 goons. Follow the onscreen prompt to drop a Smoke Pellet and then Grapple to the vantage points above.

The idea here is to take out the 8 armed thugs one at a time in order to safe the hostages. They are all armed with guns so a straight up fight will just end in death. Use the gargoyles high above the ground and your Detective Mode to survey the area. You want to observe which thugs are alone and that you can get behind. Grapple to other gargoyle if needed then glide behind an unsuspecting goon and perform a Silent Takedown. Do the same with the over lone guard then know that you can take out the pair of guards at the front of the church at the same time with a Double Takedown. Once the area has been cleared of thugs, talk to the hostages.

After rescuing the hostages, its time to get back to the task at hand: find the sniper. Near the Church entrance you'll find a door that leads to the Bell Tower. Grapple your way up to the top of the tower to discover who was behind the bullet. After the brief scene, you'll have to dive out the window of the tower by tapping the Run button twice. Do this quickly because the tower is about to explode and you don't want to be caught in that. Dive out the window and Batman will swoop to safety.

Once you've escaped the Church, it's time to triangulate the Joker's location. This will bring up a gauge on the right side of the screen. The idea is to follow the signal's strength. The signal is coming from the old Steel Mill in the lower right-hand corner of the map. While you can make a bee-line for it now, you could also swing by the Krank Co. Toys building to start the Fragile Alliance mission or answer a ringing telephone to begin the Cold Call Killer mission. [9]When you are ready to proceed, make your way to the tower on the top of the Steel Mill. This will trigger a conversation with Alfred who will inform Batman that the only way in is through the taller smoke stack nearby. Suicide? Not for Batman. Grapple up to the top of the chimney which will trigger a brief scene of Batman dive bombing into the mill through the smoke stack. Welcome to the Steel Mill.

From the wire you find Batman perched on, Glide to the nearby ledge and then run and slide under the pipes. Continue to follow this passage to the seemingly dead end. Use the Batclaw to pull open the hatch and release the water which will in turn cool the area below. Drop down below and then follow this path to the end. Climb down and hang from the ledge here then shimmy to the side and climb on top of the bent railing. Follow the railing and jump to the next railing. This will lead you to what seems to be another dead end. Use Detective Mode to see that the floor here is weak. Spray some Explosive Gel on the floor and detonate it to reveal the way out.

You'll now find yourself in the Loading Bay of the Steel Mill. You'll find that steam blocks your path ahead. Have no fear, use your Batarang to hit the switch near the ceiling to turn off the steam. Now crawl into the vent and follow it around the outskirts of a mass meeting with the Joker's thugs. Ignore them for now and simply crawl through the vents. Watch out for the flames that blow into the vents. Wait and quickly cross them in between bursts. You will eventually reach a set of steam pipes controlled by three switches. You need to simply tap the Left Trigger (or L2) three times to perform three rapid fire throws of Batarang. You do not need to target the switches. Just tap the button three times and Batman will automatically target them. Now continue along this path and you will soon reach a dead end under the Joker's goons. Pop out from underneath them and show them who's boss. Batman is completely outnumbered here but that shouldn't prove to be too much of a problem.

Leave through the door in this open room. Use Detective Mode to see the thugs in the next room. They are armed so a straight on is not the best idea. Instead, hop onto the conveyor belt and hit the switch next to the closed gate. This will open it so you can sneak into the next room via this assembly line. Take out the lone goon first then sneak behind the pair of thugs near the bumper cars.After another cutscene, Batman will be released off to the side of the Steel Mill. He's now on a hunt for Mister Freeze. Batman can now track the cold. Using this, you will discover as you head north that the coldest spot in Arkham is the Gotham City Police Department. The best approach is to head to the roof first. There are two armed punks up here that you should silently takedown. After that, note that there are two additional armed thugs on the ground. Dispatch with them then look for the entrance to the police building on ground level. Use the batarang to partially open the gate then run and slide under it. Pick up the chip from the downed joker goon and hack it then enter the building proper.nside the Gotham City Police Department, use Detective Mode to spot the armed goons in the next room. The frontal approach is suicide as usual so you better find another way. Grapple up to the walkways above the middle corridor and then run straight back. Open the vent here and crawl through it. Grapple to a vantage point from the ledge the vent leads you to and then use Detective Mode to survey the room. [10]There should be two lone thugs along this side wall where you sit. Drop down and take out the closest one with a Silent Takedown then run up the opposite stairs to the second goon and do the same to him. If you do this quickly enough, you can eliminate both while only alerting the other guards due to the heart rate monitors. As soon as you take down the second thug, Grapple up to a vantage point then swing over to the opposite wall. You will be able to perform an Inverted Takedown on a guard that comes out to investigate the others here. At this point, there is 2 remaining goons. To get fancy, throw a Batrang at one while you Glide Kick the other and then follow through with a Ground Takedown. The last enemy will give up which will allow you to Interrogate him.

After gathering info from the final thug, attempt to leave the building only to learn that you are now locked in. Open the floor grating and crawl into the front office. Use the Cryptographic Sequencer on the control panel in here. To use it, simply rotate either thumb stick around until you've reveal the password. Each thumb stick represents one half of the password and will need to be moved around independently of each other. Hack the control panel this way to unlock the front doors so you can leave the GCPD building.Here you'll find several thugs beating up on a hostage. Bust up their little party. Watch out for the stun baton wielding enemy and the armored one . Here you'll find several thugs beating up on a hostage. Bust . Remember to Evade over the stun guy . Defeat all the punks and then free the hostage.

Titan access Facility

Titan Henchmen[11]Here you'll face off against two of the Joker's Titan Henchmen. Same basic strategies from earlier giant encounters apply. Keep your distance initially, then batarang a changing titan with a Quick Throw and then quickly Evade (double tap Run) out of the way. Then go in for a quick melee combo when its stunned from running into the wall. Like Bane, these beast have three sections of health bars. The major difference with these enemies is that once a bar has been emptied, they will kneel down and become stunned. Run up and attack them and Batman will climb onto their shoulders. The titan will now stand up with you on his back. Use the control stick to steer the flailing beast around so it hit the other one. Do this until the creature throws you off then back off and repeat. Be sure to run up and finish a titan off when its health is completely empty. Defeat both monsters to proceed.

Once you've defeated the two beasts, use the Cryptographic Sequencer to open up the exit back the way you came in. There's no way to get across this ravine so Batman calls for a new gadget to be dropped off. Pick up the Line Launcher from the drop shell. This device allows you to shoot a level cable and zip along it to cross gaps. Go to the open door and look just to the right of the exit. Use the Line Launcher to zip over the small alcove and collect the Riddler Trophy (this unlocks the Silent Knight (EXTREME) challenge map). Zip back to the battle ground of the titans and then zip to the exit to reenter the Aviary. From here make your way back to the Flooded Corridor.

Flooded Corridor

Head to the western corridor and use the Line Launcher to cross the gap here. Pick up the Riddler Trophy (this unlocks the Shock and Awe challenge map) and smash the 3 sets of Joker

Teeth.There's a horde of enemies waiting for you across the gap. Use the Line Launcher to zip across and kick them over. Quickly begin fighting the ones that remained standing and combo your way through this group of goons. Once you've defeated them all, climb through the shaft leading back to the Abandoned Chamber. Make your way back through here to the Ventilation System and then back to the southern end of the Flooded Corridor. Some thugs have repowered the water here. Use the Line Launcher to cross over the water and put a hurting on the two punks waiting for you.

Reenter the Botanical Glasshouse and take out all the armed thugs here then proceed back into the Glasshouse Entrance.

Glasshouse Entrance

Destroy the 3 sets of Joker Teeth just as you reenter this room. Approach the exit to the gardens only to have giant vines block the way. Luckily they popped a piece of the flooring up so you can drop down and use the Drainage System to get to the other side of the plants and leave the Botanical Gardens for now.

Where's Killer Croc?

Arkham East

When you reemerge outside, you'll notice that joker's men have begun to take over the city. Littered about are Titan . . Navigate towards the church. Smash the 2 sets of Joker Teeth by the tall statue in front of the mansion. You won't be able to use the front door of the church so Grapple up to the ledge above and enter the through the door up here.When you enter the Mansion Entrance Hall you'll find that all but the top of the room is filled with a poisonous gas. Use the Line Launcher to zip straight across to the far end of the room and land on the air ducts here. Look up to find a vent shaft above you that you can Grapple into. Follow this duct through to Main Hall. [12]In the Main Hall you'll need to drop to the balcony to the right. Follow it north for a bit until you are stopped by vines. Now line launch to the opposite side of the room and follow this balcony north. Hop over the railing to the staircase below then find Aaron Cash to standing at the top of them.

After you talk to Cash you'll learn that there's a way into Croc's Lair via the sewer. Leave the church the same way you came in via the balconies and along the ceiling. Make your way back out to gotham East and then head up to gotham North. As you make your way through the connecting tunnel, you'll encounter a group of prisoners dressed in in security guard jackets. Watch out for the stun baton wielding ones and Evade over them and then Strike them in the back. Defeat them all then proceed to Arkham North.

On dec. 4, 2012, a Game of the Year version of gotham city was released in the United States. This edition includes four new challenge maps and is packaged with a pair of glasses which may be used to play the game in 3D on any regular 2D television, using TriOviz, a new kind of anaglyph image technique.
